CALM Clinical Workshop

The Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM) Clinical Workshop is an in-depth, 3.5-hour VIRTUAL training designed for professionals in mental health, medical, and human service fields. This evidence-informed workshop equips clinicians with practical tools and strategies to collaboratively counsel individuals and families on temporarily reducing access to firearms and dangerous medications during periods of heightened suicide risk.

Participants will learn:

• The rationale and importance of means safety interventions in suicide prevention
• Multiple strategies for increasing the safe storage of firearms
• Steps for reducing access to dangerous doses of medications
• Techniques for conducting effective, collaborative means safety conversations
• Practical intervention skills through case discussions and role-playing exercises

This workshop emphasizes compassionate, nonjudgmental communication and provides professionals with actionable approaches to help keep at-risk individuals safe during times of crisis.
